San Juan Mountains Colorado Travel Information

The few roads there are through the San Juan Mountains offer spectacular scenery, with views of snowy peaks, icy waterfalls, and historic mining sites. Listed below are some of the best San Juan drives.

Alpine Loop National Back Country Byway 65 miles 1 to 2 days
Cresting two passes that rise above 12,000 feet, this rough mountain road traverses around some of Colorado's most beautiful mountains.

Bachelor Historic Loop 17 miles 1 to 2 hours
This scenic route traces the history of Creede's silver mining district through the rugged high mountains of the San Juans. Interpretive signs and a guidebook relate much of the history of these storied mountain canyons.

San Juan Skyway 233 miles 1 to 2 days
The San Juan Skyway is a magnificent loop that crosses the San Juan Mountains twice, from Durango to Ridgway and then to Dolores. From the high mountain towns and alpine vistas to the red rock desert below, you'd be hard pressed to find a drive with more diverse terrain.

Silver Thread Scenic Byway 75 miles 2 hours
This route through the heart of the San Juan mountains is full of remnants of the mining boom that first brought white settlers to the area. The colorful scenery, however, is an equally valid reason to take this winding drive, which offers a wonderful sample of the famous mountains of Colorado.
