San Juan Mountains Colorado - Hiking

There are hundreds of trails in the San Juans, ranging in difficulty from short lake loops, to dangerous ascents to some of the nation's highest peaks. In the extreme high altitude, night temperatures can drop below freezing even in summer, and conditions may be dangerous. Contacting National Forest officials or local wilderness groups before your trip is advised.



Alpine Gulch Trail Intermediate
12 mile roundtrip 7 to 9 hours
Alpine Gulch trail is a strenuous hike that offers many scenic views.

American Basin Trail Intermediate
6.4 mile roundtrip 4 to 5 hours
American Basin Trail lead to scenic Sloan Lake, home of the threatened Colorado cutthroat trout, and up to the 14,000 foot Handies Peak.

Anderson Trail 16 mile roundtrip 1 day

Burnt Timber Trail Difficult
14 mile roundtrip 8 to 9 hours
The alpine meadows are full of blooming wildflowers in late July and in August.

Cascade Creek Trail Difficult
12 mile roundtrip 7 hours
There are several beautiful views and waterfalls.

Cataract Gulch Trail Intermediate

Cataract Gulch Trail offers a popular, scenic hike along Cataract Gulch with several small waterfalls along the way.

Cave Basin Trail Intermediate

The view from the end of the trail at the overlook looks down onto Dollar Lake, and far below to Emerald Lake at 10,000' elevation.

Clear Creek Trail Difficult

Good fishing for cutthroat and rainbow.

Coal Creek Trail (#581) 20 mile roundtrip 10 to 11 hours
This trail crosses the shoulder of a mountain and both ascent and descent are very steep.

Beautiful views of the Lake Fork Valley are visible from many points along this trail. The trail follows the Devil's Creek drainage and ends atop Cannibal Plateau at Devil's Lake.
