Gunnison Colorado - Hiking

The Gunnison area is a paradise for hikers. The town is surrounded on all sides by excellent hiking locations, including the San Juan and Elk Mountains, the Black Canyon, and Gunnison National Forest. From lakeshore trails to forest roads to dizzying peak summits, all kinds of hiking experiences are available within an hour's drive of town.



Alpine Gulch Trail Intermediate

Alpine Gulch trail is a strenuous hike that offers many scenic views.

American Basin Trail Intermediate
6.4 mile roundtrip 4 to 5 hours
American Basin Trail lead to scenic Sloan Lake, home of the threatened Colorado cutthroat trout, and up to the 14,000 foot Handies Peak.

Cataract Gulch Trail Intermediate
16.4 mile roundtrip 9 to 10 hours
Cataract Gulch Trail offers a popular, scenic hike along Cataract Gulch with several small waterfalls along the way.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park - Deadhorse Trail offers good views of Deadhorse gulch and East Portal on the Gunnison River, as well as good birding.

Devils Creek Trail Intermediate

Beautiful views of the Lake Fork Valley are visible from many points along this trail. The trail follows the Devil's Creek drainage and ends atop Cannibal Plateau at Devil's Lake.

Dillon Pinnacles Trail Intermediate
4 mile roundtrip 2 to 2.5 hours
Ascending through sagebrush, ponderosa pine and riparian habitats, this trail offers spectacular views of Blue Mesa Reservoir, the distant San Juan Mountain peaks, and the weirdly eroded volcanic Dillon Pinnacles.

East Fork Trail Intermediate

This trail follows the East Fork of Powderhorn Creek and fishing can be good all along the trail.

Grizzly Gulch Trail Intermediate

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park - This is the most popular route, and is recommended to persons attempting their first inner-canyon hike.

The view from the radio towers provides a nice overlook of Gunnison particularly in the fall when the town’s trees have turned yellow.

Hermits Rest Trail Difficult

Zigzagging through oak, pine, juniper, and fir, hikers descend to wooded camp and picnic sites on the shores of Morrow Point Reservoir.

Long Draw Trail Difficult

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park - Long Draw begins just northeast of Balanced Rock Overlook and leads to the river at a location downstream from the Narrows.

Mesa Creek Trail Easy

The sheer walls and extreme narrowness of the Black Canyon are appreciated along this trail as well as views from the base of the Morrow Point Dam.

Middle Fork Trail Intermediate

Hidden Lake, seldom visited, quiet and secluded is located along this trail and offers fair to good fishing.

Neversink Trail Easy

This trail is flat and provides easy walking. It is also wheel chair accessable.

North Vista Trail Intermediate

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park - North Vista Trail offers some of the best scenic views and birding in the Park.

Oak Flat Loop Trail Difficult

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park - The Oak Flat Loop Trail offers variety to the hiker who would like to explore below the rim without taking on the challenge of hiking to the river.

Pine Creek Trail Easy
2 mile roundtrip 1 to 1.5 hours
Follow the beautiful Pine Creek as it cascades into the depths of the upper Black Canyon to Morrow Point Reservoir.
