Lamar is a small town near the Kansas border in southeastern Colorado that services travelers on US 50. A Colorado Welcome Center and local museum offer information for visitors along the historic highway. The area is a wintering ground for Canadian and snow geese, and birdwatchers can see thousands of birds in the area during certain times of the year. Lamar is also a convenient access point to John Martin Reservoir to the west, where boating and fishing are popular.
