The Grand Mesa Scenic Byway takes you up on top of the 11,000-foot mesa for god-eye views of the surrounding countryside. The Rim Rock Drive in Colorado National Monument winds through beautiful sandstone canyons and scenic overlooks. Both drives start just miles from the city.

The Dinosaur Diamond Prehistoric Highway delivers discovery and exploration at several sites filled with science and history. The two-state Byway combines opportunities to see dinosaur bones being excavated and prepared by paleontologists for museum display. Visit the museums along the Byway that showcase reconstructed skeletons and fleshed-out recreations of dinosaurs found in the area.

This paved drive switchbacks up and over Grand Mesa, the largest flattop mountain in the world. It follow State Highway 65 in its entirety.


Unaweep / Tabeguache Scenic and Historic Byway 133 miles 3 hours
Making a long loop around the isolated Uncompahgre Plateau, this byway cuts through red sandstone canyons and provides access to backcountry hunting, camping, and fishing sites that are very infrequently visited.
