Just north of the town of Bedrock is a geological oddity called Paradox Valley, where the Dolores River intersects a canyon at right angles. After this the river plunges into Paradox Canyon, with exciting rapids, before traveling at a more leisurely pace through further canyons to the north. The Dolores intersects with the San Miguel River and passes by several interesting historical sites, including a hanging flume 400 feet above the river bed, once used to get water to a mine.
