This trail accesses the 44,560-acre Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness Area part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. Salmon River itself and the forested canyon that it goes through are the heart of the Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness Area. Salmon River supports healthy, native fisheries. Wild Chinook, Coho Salmon and Winter Steelhead along with Rainbow and Cutthroat Trout are found. A great example of old growth forest is found in the couple miles of trail. Salmon River Trail No. 742 climbs along the north shoulder of Salmon River contouring in and out of side drainages. While overall it is a fairly gentle trail but a few steeper grades are present. In a few locations the trail is carved into a steep rock outcropping overlooking the river, so good control of children and dogs is important. There are no trails down to waterfalls.
