Have a Little History With Your Morning Coffee at These Storied Washington Hotels

Description

Washington state was settled long after the Thirteen Original Colonies, which means that while the year 1620 might classify as old in the East, in the Pacific Northwest “old” is more 1890’s . Fewer Pilgrims and more progress, in other words. However, this is not to say the region has no history, nor that at select Washington hotels you won’t be able to find a closet with lurking skeletons (so to speak) and creaking floorboards.

For example, heritage finds happy company in Washington hotels at places like the restored Waterville Historic Hotel, a charming little spot to enjoy an overnight in central Washington close to the town’s historic downtown. Fancy rather proximity to natural landmark, Mount Rainier? Book yourself a stay at the Paradise Inn on the south slopes of the big mountain. Built in 1916, this one too is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and in season is a popular gathering place for climbers prepping for the slog to Rainier’s summit.

Now Centralia, Washington, might get little more than a nod from the freeway, but should you have occasion to spend a night here, The Olympic Club is the place to do it. Another listed historic site, this one is now owned by regional chain, McMenamins Pubs & Breweries. But they’ve done a nice job of preserving the feel of a haunt where once train robbers hid out in the halls. Looking rather for a scenic retreat close to the Puget Sound? Try Nadeau’s Olde Glencove Hotel. Built in 1896, this one is also on the National Register, and, conscientiously maintained, sees service as a peaceful bed & breakfast romantic enough to host many a wedding.

And finally, for atmosphere and location, it’s hard to better La Conner, a tiny town not far from Anacortes boasting a remarkably charming historic downtown. Like it enough to stay overnight? Get a room at the Hotel Planter, a renovated inn that gets props for both location and its calming courtyard.

So while you might not find that there’s an overwhelming list of Washington hotels with skeletons enough to fill a closet, there are, if you look, a choice few well worth a detour for a little historical perspective (and just maybe some romance).
