Tracing the route of one of the West's most famous trails, this byway passes several important historic sites in Colorado before continuing south into the desert of New Mexico.

Location: Southeastern Colorado, between Trinidad and Holly near the Kansas border.
Setting: Flat to Hilly
Surface: Paved
Length: Colorado segment: 170 miles, Entire Byway: 565 miles
The complete byway continues south to Santa Fe, and includes a leg to northeastern New Mexico.
Time to Allow: Colorado segment: 3 hours
Entire route: 1 to 2 days
Camping Info: Trinidad State Park, John Martin Reservoir State Park
Season: Year-round
