Departing from US 550 near Silverton, Corkscrew Gulch to Animas Forks provides some challenges for drivers as it ascends through the Red Mountain area to Hurricane Pass. The views of the surrounding mountains are tremendous. The road becomes easier as it goes through California Pass and heads by several picturesque mountain lakes and a number of railroad and mining ruins. Much of the trail is frequently in shadow, and can be snowy and muddy even late in the season.
