Description

Trail climbs from Sweetwater Lake to the Flat Tops Wilderness Area through mountain brush and spruce/fir/aspen forest. The scenery is panoramic and outstanding. Fishing is available at Hack Lake and other lakes in the area. Wildlife watching and primitive camping opportunities are excellent. The trail was originally used by the Ute Indians until late 1800's for access over the Flat Tops, and later became a National Forest trail.

Flat to rugged slopes on the edge of the Flat Tops Wilderness.

A small portion of this area is Wilderness Study Area.

Vegetation includes spruce, fir and aspen meadows. Fishing is available ( Cutthroat trout).

The trail connects to other trails in the area which provide loop backs to Sweetwater and alternate routes into the Flat Tops where an extensive network of trails is available. Use limited to hiking and horseback riding; motorized vehicles are prohibited.

There is a developed forest service campground with parking, toilets, tables and fireplaces, and guest resort at Sweetwater Lake with restaurant.

Basic Directions

From I-70 at Dotsero drive north on the Colorado River Road. (Eagle county 301) about 6.5 miles, then drive northwest on the Sweetwater Road (County) to Sweetwater Lake.

Alternate Route - Take Sheep Creek Road 4 miles before Sweetwater Lake and drive on the dirt road 5 miles to undeveloped camping area. Four wheel drive is recommended when wet.
