Southern Mexico - Overview
Far removed from the hectic pace of top resort destinations, Southern Mexico is laid back and lovely. Oaxaca City, the region's largest urban area, is graced with fine historic architecture and art. Explore charming churches, colorful markets or slip easily into a languid day of people-watching. The road south from Oaxaca winds down to the Pacific for access to the smashing Pacific around Puerto Escondido and protected bays of Huatulco. Head north to Puerto Escondido for some of the world's best surfing breaks. When the swell is low, drive south to Huatulco for rugged beaches and ecological tours of region highlights. San Cristobal de las Casas in the far south offers, like Oaxaca, a range of cultural attractions. Take a tour through outlying villages to experience a relatively untouched way of Mexican life. |
