Northern Mexico - Overview

Map of Northern Mexico

From the dramatic beauty of soaring cliffs in rugged Copper Canyon to modern metropolis Monterrey, Northern Mexico is a study in contrasts. Find time-forgotten villages a day's journey from sleepy Spanish-style retreats or sandy, sun-washed shores.

Monterrey, the region's big city, is the third largest in Mexico, an industrial center that also offers visitors a variety of cultural and architectural sights. Get a taste of national art offerings and history before migrating on to other climes.

Nature enthusiasts and the artistic type may do well to escape to the charming town of Alamos. Nestled between desert and forest, restored homes and gardens preserve the gentile ambiance of a by-gone age. Stop in on a break from a long Mexico tour to relax, learn the language and wander the hills, alive with the sound of birds and breezes.

One of Mexico's loveliest natural assets is the Barranca del Cobre, (Copper Canyon). Ribboned with waterfalls and cut through with deep chasms, this canyon region boasts activities to keep everyone from avid hikers to casual visitors occupied. A train links the small villages nestled between the cliffs making secret hot springs, startling rock formations and spectacular views easily accessible.

Get some down-time on the beaches north of Guaymas on the Sea of Cortez before voyaging south. San Carlos, just north of this port city, boasts a range of water-related attractions, from snorkeling to fishing. Give your tan a break with a trip up into the Sierra Madre for lofty mountain peeks and breath-taking roads.

Durango is located on the north-south route from Ciudad Juarez to Mexico City, a windy, steep ride over from Mazatlan. Stop for lunch at charming Copala, or stretch out with a hike in Angel's Gateway State Park en route. Take a stroll through Durango and have a look at movie sets once used in old western films before driving on.

Northern Mexico has both culture and outdoor adventure to appease the demanding traveler. If you don't rush the trip, you can expect to experience a sampling of true Mexico.
