Baja California - Overview

Map of Baja, California in Mexico The Baja Peninsula stretches long and lean through the Pacific, separated from mainland Mexico by the Sea of Cortez. Over 1000 miles long, a thorough Baja adventure ranges from mountains to desert to secluded beaches and finishes with hedonistic activity at the tip in Los Cabos.

Whales cruise past on their way to warm winter accommodations in the lagoons and shallow waters off Baja's coast, while Pacific waters teem with fish, reeling in visitors who want to see sea creatures or catch them. Some of the best angling options are along the Pacific side of Baja, so plan your fishing vacation accordingly.

Historic architecture graces cities like Ensenada and San Jose del Cabo but for pictures to put on the wall, explore the region's natural attractions. Scuba divers and snorkellers can glide languidly through the protected waters of Loreto on the east side of the peninsula, or explore shipwrecks, caves and sea lions in the warm seas around Cabo San Lucas.

Daytrip from Santa Rosalia for cave paintings or head south to Mulege for an afternoon of lovely warm beaches. Bask in the bright colors of a Mexican sunset and watch for whales from the comfort of soft sands rimming the city of La Paz.

Cap your Baja trip with some time at 'Los Cabos' - Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. Find parties, water-related fun, fishing and endless rounds of golf in Cabo San Lucas. Visit the beaches carved into the rocky shores along the road linking Cabo to San Jose del Cabo but continue east for solitude and the white powdery sands that stretch away around the coast.

Baja offers plenty of opportunities to bask on the beach and for the action-addicted, plenty of adventure. Stick to the developed areas if you're want all the creature comforts, or find real Baja culture in one of the smaller villages dotting the peninsula. Whatever you're after, be prepared to soak up the easy life, and don't forget the sun block.
