South Forty

This brand new golf course, 1 mile south of Cortez, is not only family oriented, it's a family endeavor. Built over ten years by the Maness family, it's situated on what was once a farm and is now a very scenic course. The Ute Mountains rise to the east, Mesa Verde is to the south, and La Plata Range spreads across the northeast. If you play here in the evening, you may share the greens with deer and wild rabbits.

Beyond beautiful, South Forty is also a very affordable place to play. Children 12 and under play free. Adults pay $10 a round, and students only $5. If you stop by on "High 5 Fridays," you'll only pay $5 at most.

The course is open during daylight hours, sunrise to sunset. Both the greens and the driving range are often self-service. A ball-dispenser on site will take tokens or $1 bills. If you want a half-bucket of balls, it's only $2. The casual, homey feel of the course extends to everything about it. You'll not only find picnic tables here, but a porch swing. What isn't casual is the difficulty of the play - this is a hard course.
