Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site

For a century and a half, the Sand Creek Massacre has continued to be one of the nation's most profound historic events. The personalities involved at Sand Creek, as well as its causes and aftermath have been studied and debated for 143 years.

 Directions

The Sand Creek Massacre is located in Kiowa County Colorado. The southern boundary of the site is approximately 20 miles northeast of Eads, Colorado and 10 miles north of Chivington, Colorado.


 Climate
 

The weather in southeastern Colorado generally consists of hot summers and cold to moderate winters. Occasional periods of excessive heat, with temperatures in the low 100s may be encountered June-September. Occasional periods of excessive cold, with temperatures 0° to 20° below may be encountered November-February. Moisture is variable, with spring and summer rain being the most consistent feature. The area, like much of the west, has periods of intense drought.
