Montrose Colorado Travel Information

Several companies offer raft trips on the Gunnison River, with launch points near Delta (about 30 miles north of Montrose).

Gunnison River Up to Class IV
1/2 day, full-day, multi-day
The Gunnison River in western Colorado is one of the primary headwaters of the Colorado River system. Cascading down from alpine lakes in the Elk Mountains, the river empties into the Blue Mesa Reservoir, the largest body of water in Colorado. Past the reservoir the river winds through the spectacular Black Canyon, with narrow rock walls rising over 2,000 feet on either side.

Gunnison River - Gunnison Gorge Up to Class IV
Full Day or Multi Day
Starting from the west border of Black Canyon National Park, the Gunnison River winds through spectacular scenery as it cuts through some of the oldest exposed rock in the country. Several challenging rapids round out the trip with wet thrills, making this one of the best trips in western Colorado.

Gunnison River - Lower Up to Class II
Full Day or Multi Day
Below Gunnison Gorge, the river becomes tranquil again as it joins the Uncompahgre near Delta and continues on to its rendezvous with the Colorado at Grand Junction. Rafters along this section glide by large petroglyph panels on the sandstone canyon walls, side canyons with waterfalls and pools, and many opportunities for short hikes.

Gunnison River - Upper Up to Class II
1/2 Day or Full Day
Before the Upper Gunnison widens into Blue Mesa Reservoir, rafters can enjoy a gentle ride through Gunnison Valley. There are no dangerous rapids along this route, where the young river drifts through farmlands and groves of cottonwood trees.
