The northern San Juan Mountains that provide a serene background to Montrose are explored by several scenic drives. In Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park you can drive winding rim roads with thrilling views of the narrow, steep canyon.




Grand Mesa Scenic and Historic Byway 63 miles 2 hours
This paved drive switchbacks up and over Grand Mesa, the largest flattop mountain in the world. It follow State Highway 65 in its entirety.

St. Joe River Scenic Byway 89 miles (143 km)

Unaweep/Tabeguache Scenic and Historic Byway 133 miles (214 km) Allow at least 3 hours driving time, not including stops, to travel the entire route.
