Loveland is one of the few large ski areas along the I-70 corridor that has not become a "resort." This translates to cheaper lift tickets, less crowding, free parking, and a focus on skiing and boarding.
This is a locals mountain and a mountain especially friendly to advanced skiers. There is plenty of material for experts including the recently-opened "The Ridge," serviced by a 4-man chairlift that reaches 12,700 ft; and opens up to double-diamond runs down either side of the continental divide.
There are two areas within the Loveland Ski Area. One is the larger Loveland Basin Ski Area (large enough, in fact, to consist of 85% of the ski area's acreage). The main lodge is here, as well as the trickiest terrain in the park. Black and double-black runs are everywhere - and the Ridge is only part of the Basin. The Love Park terrain park is also in this trickier part of Loveland, and its difficulty ranges from easy to advanced. Expect rails, jumps and everything in between.
The Loveland Valley Ski Area is the second part of the park. This is the beginner segment of the ski area, home to gentle slopes serviced by only two lifts (one accesses All Smiles, the pure beginner slope, and the other accesses the intermediate runs). The Ski and Ride School is here, as is the Loveland Race Club. A free shuttle joins the Basin and the Valley Ski Areas.
