The route makes a loop between Walsenburg, Trinidad, and Cuchara, passing a number of pretty small towns and historic remnants of the coal mining that once took place here. The beautiful Sangre de Cristo Mountains on the horizon watch over this countryside on the border between the prairie and the southwest desert.
