Gunnison Colorado - Scenic Drives

Scenic drives to consider in the Gunnison area are listed below. Click on any scenic byway or backway listed below for complete information.

Silver Thread Scenic Byway 75 miles 2 hours
This route through the heart of the San Juan mountains is full of remnants of the mining boom that first brought white settlers to the area. The colorful scenery, however, is an equally valid reason to take this winding drive, which offers a wonderful sample of the famous mountains of Colorado.

West Elk Loop 205 miles 6 to 8 hours
A beautiful day trip, the West Elk Loop makes a full circle around one of Colorado's mountain groups. Along the way, the route passes such beautiful spots as the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Blue Mesa, the picturesque mountain town of Crested Butte, and two state parks.
