Starting from the west border of Black Canyon National Park, the Gunnison River winds through spectacular scenery as it cuts through some of the oldest exposed rock in the country. The trout fishing in these waters is excellent, earning the national designation of Gold Medal Waters. Keen-eyed rafters might also spot river otters, bighorn sheep, and bald eagles. Several challenging rapids round out the trip with wet thrills, making this one of the best trips in western Colorado. The isolation of the route is emphasized by the river's lack of road access; you must walk down a 1 mile trail to the access point.
