Old roads heading up to abandoned mines are abundant in this region. In early winter or mid-spring, 4x4 vehicles are often the only way to get around on any but the major roads.

Apex/Kingston Peak Intermediate
25 miles 2 to 3 hours
The Kingston Peak road crosses an above-treeline bench at 12,000 feet elevation for spectacular views of nearby James Peak.

Bill Moore Lake Difficult
6 miles 1 to 1.5 hours
This short but very pretty route leads up to Bill Moore Lake, with spectacular views of the surrounding landscape.

Kingston Peak Intermediate
7 miles 2 to 3 hours
This road climbs through some steep forested terrain, before rising above treeline and crossing alpine tundra with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.

Mammoth Gulch Beginner
8 miles 1 to 1.5 hours
The Mammoth Gulch Road is fairly easy and not very steep, providing access to good fishing and camping sites.

Red Cone / Webster Pass Intermediate
Difficult
20 miles 3 to 5 hours
The Red Cone/Webster Pass trail climbs over a rocky road through forest until it rises above treeline. From here, a challenging road leads to the top of Red Cone and a ridge trail, with sweeping views of the central Rockies.

Santa Fe Peak Trail Difficult
5 miles 1.5 to 2 hours
The Santa Fe Peak Trail is a challenging road that traverses a series of tight switchbacks and open ridges to a stunning viewpoint from the top of the peak.
