Crested Butte Mountain Resort Crested Butte Mountain Resort, tucked off the beaten path in the Elk Mountains, is a moderately large ski area catering to advanced skiers. Nearly half the resort is taken up by "Extreme Limits," a steep expert-only area of ungroomed powder.

The resort has more double-black diamond terrain than any other ski area in the state. The US Extreme Skiing and Snowboard Championships are held here annually.

From Denver:

Take Interstate 25 south to Colorado Springs. Take U.S. Highway 24 west then south to U.S. Highway 50. Head west on U.S. 50 to Gunnison. Take Highway 135 north from Gunnison to Crested Butte. Crested Butte is approximately 250 miles from Denver

From Gunnison:

Take U.S. 135 to Crested Butte. Crested Butte is approximately 25 miles from Gunnison
