Montrose is located in the center of the Uncompahgre Valley on the Western Slope of the Continental Divide. This is the Colorado that people dream about.

Montrose is home to the Black Canyon National Park and offers scenic mountains, valleys, canyons, mesas, lakes and rivers, plus all the recreational activities that accompany these natural wonders like hiking, mountain biking, skiing, fishing, camping, boating and more.

Montrose lies at an elevation of 5,794 feet above sea level, has mild summers and winters with minimal snow accumulation in the city, making a great four season playground. The Colorado Rockies lie directly east of Montrose and the spires of the San Juan Mountains sparkle just 25 miles south. Grand Mesa, the largest flat top mountain in the world, looms 40 miles to the north, while the world renowned hunting grounds of the Uncompahgre Plateau frame the western sunset.

The Montrose area is loaded with fun in every direction, accessible, and centrally located no matter what your interest. In the winter you can enjoy snowmobiling, ice fishing, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, and the Cerro Summit Winter Recreation Area, which is a 30-minute drive from Montrose. Telluride, Crested Butte and Powderhorn are the three closest downhill ski/snowboard resorts. The area also hosts monthly SASS and USPSA shooting matches and recreational shooting.

Locals and tourists alike enjoy the summer opportunities to hike, mountain bike, river raft, take part in BMX races, and enjoy the services offered by the Recreation District, including our nationally ranked skate park. Other activities include horseback riding, camping, tennis, fishing, boating, water and jet skiing, 4X4 and off-roading, and golf.

The spectacular scenic byways around Montrose County are rich in beauty and variety. Some highlights along the way include epic skiing at Crested Butte and Telluride, rafting and kayaking on the Gunnison River, or hiking through the Grand Mesa and Uncompahgre National Forests. Fishing and camping in scenic Curecanti National Recreation Area draws visitors back year after year, as there is always more to explore.

The expansive lands around Montrose are world renowned for excellent hunting, and are full of game such as trophy elk, wild turkeys, antelope, deer, and game birds. Whether exploring the miles of trails on horseback, on mountain bike, offroad vehicle, or by foot, there is much to see.

We are blessed with natural beauty for work and play. Besides having this natural beauty we have a great educational system including a growing college, state-of-the-art airport, solid community and governmental leadership, all the events and amenities one could imagine, effective law enforcement, a robust economy, strong agricultural foundation, and some of the finest restaurants and retail shops anywhere.
