A series of 29 backcountry huts allow for multi-day trips through some of the most ruggedly beautiful countryside in the state. The Sawatch Range runs through the heart of the Rocky Mountains, and the area between Aspen and Vail contains three wilderness areas and some of the state's highest peaks. Huts are spaced about 8 miles apart, and backcountry travelers must use their orienteering skills to navigate between them in the trailness wilderness areas. For the experienced and prepared cross-country skier, there is truly no more magnificent experience than a multi-day backcountry trip through these stunning mountains.
